Frequently asked questions
What is a surrogate?
A surrogate mother, also known as a gestational carrier,is a woman who carries and gives birth to a child for another individual or couple. The child usually will not be biologically related to the surrogate mother. This typically involves using in vitro fertilization where the fertilized embryo is implanted into the surrogate’s uterus.
Who can be a surrogate?
A surrogate mother is a healthy childbearing age of 20.5- 39. This person should have already had children successfully and should meet the basic qualifications.
The criteria for becoming a surrogate mother will vary by state to state.
What would disqualify me as a surrogate?
There are various factors that can disqualify a person from being a surrogate mother. For example, certain medical conditions, BMI and other reproductive health issues, substance abuse, psychological health and inadequate living situations.
It is important to note that surrogacy eligibility can vary from state to state and Miracle Makers Surrogacy will review and consult with medical professionals for guidance.
How long does the process take?
Typically the process will take 1 to 1.5 years.
Who are the intended parents? Why do they need a surrogate?
The intended parents’ situation will vary from case to case. For example, some IPs will be traditional families who are unable to reproduce without assistance, or same sex couples who are unable to reproduce.
How much travel is involved?
This will vary from case to case, but the minimum travel will be two trips to Los Angeles where the embryo will be located.
Can I continue my current job?
Yes, we encourage you to keep your current job. Being a surrogate should not be your only form of income.
What is the difference between gestational surrogacy and traditional surrogacy?
At MMS we only focus on gestational surrogacy. As a gestational carrier, the egg is donated by the intended mother or egg donor, the embryo that is implanted in the surrogate by IVF. You will not be biologically related to the offspring.
